Introduction: Welcome to Home of the Skippers! North Kingstown High School, or NKHS, is a public secondary school located in North Kingstown, Rhode Island. It is a very large town with 56.8 square miles. This great school, which serves grades 9–12, is attended by residents of both North Kingstown and Jamestown. In this town, there are 8 schools. The elementary schools consists of Stony Lane, Henseler/Quidnessett, Hamilton, Forest Park, and Fishing Cove. The middle schools are Wickford and Davisville Middle School. Lastly, the high school is North Kingstown High School. In North Kingstown, there is a Marine Biology Center. This fun place has hands-on activities for families and schools since the year of 1989! Kids that go to the Marine Center is proven that they get better grades in school. Furthermore, about a half hour away is Newport. This beautiful town that is on the water has many sight seeing areas. Also, it has several shops and resturants. If you are looking for something to do with your family and friends this town is the perfect place to come! It is only a half an hour from North Kingstown. You will not regret it! Monday through Friday, school takes part from 7:30 in the morning until 2:30 in the afternoon and is 50% females as well as 50% males. As of 2009, there were 1,655 students enrolled, and the faculty consisted of approximately 130 teachers. Students at NKHS wear their school colors black, gold, and white with pride and spirit. Students enjoy singing the school song, Alma Mater. The kids get very into their school newspaper known as The Current Waver. In this, there is the latest sporting events, things going on around town, and much more. North Kingstown High School is known for their huge auditorium with a stage, cafeteria, computer labs, infirmary, library, science labs and sports facilities. As a matter of fact, North Kingstown High School was recently rated as one of the top 500 schools in the country by U.S. News and World Report.
Community Background: North Kingstown has a great median household income. With Rhode Island having $54,902, North Kingstown comes to around $76,316. Therefore, North Kingstown is about $20,000 higher than Rhode Island all together. It is a very large town with 56.8 square miles. As you can see, towards the left in North Kingstown, about 94% of kids are American Indian. Also, in Rhode Island, there are 69% American Indian. All together, Rhode Island is mostly made up of white/caucasian people
With Rhode Island having $54,902 of a median household income, North Kingstown comes to around $76,316. Therefore, North Kingstown is about $20,000 higher than Rhode Island all together. According to the 2010-2011 US Census, the families below poverty level are 4% and Rhode Island is 8.4%. As we can tell, North Kingstown reduces to about a half of Rhode Island. Another positive thing about North Kingstown is the high school graduation rate. In Rhode Island, the students that received a high school diploma was 83.7%. In 2011, North Kingstown had 88% of students that graduated high school. This is a great thing because only few students did not receive their diploma, and it is a higher rate than Rhode Island all together.
The child population has varied a lot in Rhode Island. For example, in 1990, there were 225,690 kids. Then, 10 years later in 2000, it decreased about 3,000 to 247,822 people. Recently, from the Census in 2010, Rhode Island currently has 223,956 children. In North Kingstown, there are 6,322 kids. The childrenin single-parent families are increasing rapidly with divorce rates. In North Kingstown, there are 28% of kids with single-parent families. Rhode Island has 31% kids with single parent families. These numbers are pretty close to each other. Another close statistic would happen with households with grandparents financially responsible for their grandchildren. North Kingstown currently has 4%, and Rhode Island is right there with 6%.
District Summary North Kingstown consists of 8 schools in the district which are 5 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, and 1 high school. The student to teacher ratio is currently 1 teacher to 14 students (1:14), or as you can see in the table below. The statewide ratio of students to teachers are 1:11. North Kingstown provides a learning environment where students can find any type of learning that they are searching for. Whether they are auditory or visual learners, they will definitely learn as much as possible. Teachers in North Kingstown are willing to help students with extra help. Furthermore, the teacher to student ratio in Rhode Island is 1:11, and also in Barrington, RI. Barrington is one of the wealthiest towns in Rhode Island. Central Falls, which is one of the worst districts in Rhode Island, has a ratio of 1:9.
School Analysis
North Kingstown is considered a large school having 1,655 students and approximately 130 teachers. Thomas W. Kenworthy plays a great role in being the principal.
In the graph shown to the right, we can notice that North Kingstown High School has done almost perfect on the reading NECAP, but students should probably get extra help or tutored in math, although the test scores are not terrible.
Shown above is the writing NECAP for one elementary school, one middle school and North Kingstown High School. These scores are very close to each other, as we can see. The yellow, being North Kingstown, has actually done better than the "average" students in Rhode Island. Teachers not North Kingstown High School but in all of the North Kingstown District make sure the students pass at least the proficient part of the NECAP, although they strive for even better.
The graph towards the left is another example of how great the NECAP scores are in North Kingstown. With the statewide of Rhode Island being 19,19, and 25, North Kingstown ended up being higher once again to 25,28, and 29.
Conclusion In conclusion, North Kingstown High School a school with many opportunities in it. Teachers build great bonds with all of their students and are focused on moving onto a further chapter in their life. There are not only great site seeing attractions, but parents can choose to where there kids want to attend school for elementary and middle school. The wide range of clubs, classes, and extracurricular activities provides the school-wide community that any student would ever wish for. The NACEP scores, teacher to student ratio and percent of qualified teachers seem to be a lot higher and better than all of the other schools. In North Kingstown, kids and families will never be bored. Families that are moving into North Kingstown should 100% consider sending their students to this high school because of all the opportunities it offers. Here, many students have furthered their education, and with North Kingstown High School, they have been very successful so far. Kids in North Kingstown do not regret living here. North Kingstown High School is an incredible public school where there is so much to offer.
